Peoples of Doamanse

Inlanders

The Inlanders live where the land itself moves.

To survive in the Inlands, a person must learn patience, balance, attention, and respect. The wet can nourish or kill. Dry ground can shift. A creature may be enemy, test, or companion. A tree may remember more than a village dares to say.

The Inlanders are Ray and Tall’s people, and their way of seeing the world shapes everything that follows.

Values of the In

Inlander culture is shaped by the living wet, village memory, and the practical knowledge of survival.

Patience and Attention

Safe movement requires balance, staff-feel, listening, probing, and respect for ground that may change.

Fear as Awareness

In the Inlands, fear is not shame. Fear is the body noticing what courage must respect.

Living Bonds

Land, creature, tree, family, village, memory, and companion are connected in practical and sacred ways.

Village Roles

Inlander roles connect work, survival, memory, gift, and belonging.

Caller and Seer

A caller can reach or bond through Yearning. A seer may see paths, truths, visions, or hidden connections. Ray and Tall carry these gifts in different ways.

Speaker, Crafter, Grower, Gatherer

Other village roles connect language, woodcraft, food, survival, memory, and social life. These roles make Inlander culture feel practical rather than abstract.

Relater

A relater is connected to social memory, relationship, and the telling or carrying of meaning between people.

In a culture built around memory and village belonging, such roles matter deeply.

Rites of Passage and Companion Bonds

Around thirteen, boys leave the village on a quest toward Lost and Deep.

The Quest

They gather supplies, travel through the wet, reach Lost and Deep, mark the arbors, and choose a life companion.

The quest is not only about bravery. It is about becoming ready to take one’s place in the living world.

Companion Bonds

A chosen creature is not simply a tool. It becomes part of the person’s path.

Ray and True show one form of chosen companion bond. Tall’s uncontrolled bonds show what can happen when compassion outruns understanding.

Inlanders and Outsiders

Inlanders may call people beyond the wet Outlanders or the Out. Early fear and distrust make sense from their perspective, but the Magic Lands story complicates every easy division between In and Out.

Ray’s journey begins by crossing that boundary.

Enter the Magic Lands

Begin with Magic Lands: Journey Beyond the Beyond, where Ray leaves the living Inlands and discovers that his path reaches far beyond home.
